making of rubber stamps + rubber stamp cleaning tips

here are some videos of stamp carving process....
it is labor intensive. making templates > transferring designs on rubber blocks > carving them to cleaning them > testing > readjusting > cleaning!
i particularly enjoy carving letters.
one of my favorite fonts is typewriter font. there are 3 sizes i carry in my shop ( i only make them as custom made as it takes a while ).
there are several other fonts i am planning to carve and list in m shop this year.

i recently got some questions how i clean pencil marks after carving or remained inks after stamping. there are several means.

i personally use :

  • makeup remover, make up cotton pads, soap water + air dry.

there are lots of stamp cleaning supplies available :

  • stamp cleaner (liquid ones for water based inks and oil based inks)
  • kneaded eraser designed for cleaning stamps
  • stamp scrubber (soft micro fiber attached to the pads)
  • the body shop's body butter, soap water + air dry

hand carved rubber stamps are made from soft rubber...so cleaning as gentle as possible is important to keep it in good condition.

february 2016

it has been fulfilling new year.
in 2015, i started a new range of items.
japanese teugui towels hand printed with talktothesun's rubber stamps.
stamping on fabric is still new area for me even though i have been trying since 2012. i will continue to try and make some new designs for these towels in 2016 too.
also started experimenting more illustrations and carve them into larger scale stamps. my rubber stamps are mostly with one motif, a lion or a house...or a few motifs separately carved as a set. layering some different parts to create multi colored prints are totally new and there are many mistakes when carving or when making a template!

here are some results.
tenugui towels and some note cards are now available at talktothesun.etsy.com.

news in 2015

happy belated new year. it is june 2015 already. i have been very busy since the new year started.
in end of march to early april, i finally had a change to go on a new adventure. that was a chance to travel to cologne, bonn, dusseldorf, hagen and amsterdam. it was during the easter holidays. for me being in japan, it was a perfect break time for off season to travel to europe.
i have never been to west part of germany except for a brief visit in cologne, munich and frankfurt back in 2002. i have never been to netherlands either. so the weather there was unexpectedly cold and windy for me...i enjoyed tremendously to explore somewhere new.

i have decided to share a few photos i took there in both germany and amsterdam.
i very much hope to be back to amsterdam as there were so many places i could not go in 2 days. also, next time, i would love to visit some other part of europe.

this trip gave me a great refreshment and had a plenty of time to doodle! some new rubber stamps were updated in my shop after this holiday.

around the same time in march, i got an email from the sketchbook project team about the news that one of my page of the sketchbook i joined back in 2012 was included in their book "the sketchbook project world tour". i enjoyed that projects. anyone basically join after registering to participate with some application fees. some of my favorite artists were promoting the event and my friend let me know if i knew about it. i checked and i found it very interesting that someone's sketchbook would be stored at their library. it would be like reading someone's art journals. so i started it. it was hard in the 1st few pages as i was not sure what to do...after that, i let my imagination and started drawing or stamping!

they are the page the team chose to include in their book. there are more info in my "blog/media feature" section in my blog.

well, that is all for now. but i will be updating some custom made stamps i have done so far this year will be listed here soon.

happy october

since my last blog post...3 months have passed without realizing it!

there is a happy announcement...
2 shops in australia and new zealand will be stocking some of talktothesun's rubber stamps...
the shop info is listed here.

other than that, i have been pretty busy making lots of rubber stamps, studio constructions and helping some kids school work during summer!

my studio got a new floor boards...it used to be tatami mats but for safety reasons and from its age, it was time to change. the result is great and i enjoy working there smelling natural wood.
yet, i have not got time to install furniture other than my work tables and a cabinet...so it will be restored before christmas hopefully but if not, i will wait till end of january after my work have a little break then...cannot wait to get some new shelves and a little coffee table....

autumn is here in japan...but we have had 2 biggest typhoons this year (one of them is approaching to japan right now...so we don't know how bad it will be...). some photos of our neighborhood.
lots of great  food and nature is just beautiful!

end of july

july is almost over.
here in japan, it has been pretty hot and humid. a few days ago, my town was broadcasted national wide because of its weather! 40 degrees and 94% humidity...i could hardly believed it...it was already 30 degrees and 94% humidity at 5 am...!

in this weather, there is one flower in my neighborhood which boom and bright like sun...yes, sunflowers...some farmers next to me are happy for me to take their gardens without permission entering their gardens...some are along the road in their farms so i just take photos while i am walking around the neighborhood...others just bloom in the middle of nowhere...

so wherever i look in summer, there is a patch of land where i see sunflowers. so nice.
here are some photos taken around my house.
